Petro-Canada, one of Canada's largest oil and gas companies, chose Eaton to retrofit a competitor's existing MCCs with new
"wrappers" for $150K. This was a substantial dollar savings over replacing existing MCCs with new ones. When Petro-Canada began transforming its Rebecca Street facility from a refinery into a distribution center, it asked Eaton's Loreto Persichetti as well as its current MCC supplier for a solution that would enable it to use its existing MCCs and replace FVNR NEMA starters with reduced voltage starters that could communicate on Modbus TCP/IP to a PLC. Eaton's Lorne Gould reports, "Eaton developed a $150k solution for retrofitting the existing MCCs with new wrappers. Our Mississauga Satellite Plant was able to obtain existing MCC backpans, create new ones where needed, and replace existing components, including tri-paks, limiters and FVNR starters, with S811 SSRVs complete with a D77D-EMA to communicate on Modbus TCP/IP. "The small size of Eaton's S811 device was a key factor to the success of the retrofit. The integral run bypass contactor also reduced the space needed for the retrofit, as well as the fact that the D77D-EMA enabled the customer to obtain critical motor data from the S811 (communications capability). According to Petro-Canada Oakville and Teng and Associates, the Eaton solution was particularly noteworthy because of the unusual challenge of trying to retrofit a competitor's MCC with a SSRV in a 'wrapper sized for a NEMA starter'. To date, the company notes, the quality of work and support from Eaton have been excellent, and the product is working extremely well in a difficult retrofit application. A consultant working with Petro-Canada, who had been using the competitor's products, noted that using the capabilities of Eaton's satellite plant to provide custom-designed solutions enabled the company to support the local market with a retrofit of existing equipment within a short delivery window. Gould adds, "This win is a dramatic demonstration of the value our satellite plants add to our ability to provide customers with economical ways to implement our world class products, like the S811. It also illustrates the impact of offering our customers solutions rather than merely selling them components."
